The Problem That Led Us to Build Via: A Commerce Intelligence System

Brands don’t have a data problem. If anything, they have the opposite.

Commerce teams have more information available to them than ever before.  There are dashboards for sales, media, inventory, pricing, content, profitability, and nearly every other part of the business. That visibility is valuable, but it hasn’t necessarily made decision-making easier. In many organizations, more data has simply created more places to look, more signals to interpret, and more time spent trying to understand what actually matters. More trees, less forest.

The harder problem is knowing what deserves attention first, understanding what the signal actually means, and turning it into a decision while there’s still time to act. Many brands  can explain what happened last week.  Fewer can identify what changed, understand why, and act on it before the week is over.

That gap between information and action is the problem we built Via to address.

Via is Channel Key’s proprietary commerce intelligence system. It brings together fragmented commerce data, context, and signals  so our teams can identify what deserves attention faster, understand what may be driving it, and move toward the right decision with greater confidence.

We didn’t build Via because brands needed another dashboard. We built it because the work that happens after the dashboard identifies a change was taking too long.

The idea wasn’t to add another dashboard. We already had plenty of those. What kept slowing things down was everything that happened after the data showed up. Someone still had to piece the story together, figure out what was happening, and decide what to do about it.

That process eats up a lot of time. Meanwhile, the business keeps moving. So do its competitors.

Via unlocks a faster way to get from signal to decision. Put that in the hands of people who already know your channel, category, and brand, and you can move with a lot more confidence. Via can surface the opportunity. Our team knows how to turn it into the right move.

More Data Hasn’t Eliminated the Work of Making Sense of It

Most commerce organizations already have the information they need somewhere. The challenge is connecting it.

When performance changes, the investigation often begins across several different systems. Someone looks at sales. Another person reviews media. The team checks traffic, inventory, pricing, content, competitive activity, and conversion. Reports get pulled, data gets reconciled, and people start piecing together a story about what may have happened.

Eventually, the picture becomes clearer. But the process itself consumes valuable time, and the business keeps moving while the team is investigating.

That is where we saw an opportunity to work differently. The value isn’t simply in surfacing another metric or creating another view of the business. It comes from making it easier to connect the relevant signals and quickly answer the questions that actually drive action: What changed? Why does it matter? Where should we focus? What should we do next? And what could that opportunity be worth?

Via helps our teams get to those questions faster.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Consider a product that starts losing momentum. At first, nothing looks broken. Traffic is holding, advertising engagement remains healthy, and revenue is softening just enough to create concern without making the cause immediately clear.

In a traditional setup, that triggers  a wide investigation.  The media team checks campaign performance. Someone reviews traffic and conversion. Another person looks at pricing, inventory, or content. The team compares information across different platforms until the likely cause begins to emerge.

Via gives the team a faster starting point by connecting those signals in context.

If traffic remains steady while conversion begins to decline, for example, the first place to investigate probably isn’t media. That shifts the conversation toward the product experience. Has the competitive shelf changed? Has pricing moved? Is the detail page falling behind? Does the content need a targeted refresh, or is there a larger rebuild opportunity?

The important change is not that Via makes the decision for the team. It helps the team get to the right decision point faster.

Once the likely opportunity is clear, the team can also begin estimating its potential commercial impact. That creates a more disciplined way to prioritize the work. Instead of treating every issue or optimization opportunity equally, we can focus attention where the business has the most to gain.

That is the basic operating logic behind Via: spot the signal, add context, determine the next move, and understand the potential impact.

Built From the Operator Side of the Problem

Our teams have spent decades operating inside commerce businesses and making decisions across strategy, media, content, operations, and marketplaces. Over time, we kept seeing the same pattern: experienced people were spending too much of their time gathering and reconciling information that already existed and not enough time applying their expertise to what the business should do next.

That gave us a very different starting point than building a traditional reporting platform. We weren’t trying to create technology and then find a use case for it. We were trying to solve friction our teams encountered every day.

The result is technology built around the way experienced commerce operators actually work. Via can help identify the signal, connect the relevant context, and bring the opportunity into focus. Our people still bring the judgment, category knowledge, and experience required to determine the right response.

That distinction is important. We didn’t build Via to replace the expertise behind Channel Key. We built it to make that expertise more effective.

Better Prioritization, Even When the Work Stays In-House

Not every brand needs an outside partner to execute every part of its commerce strategy. Many organizations already  have strong internal ecommerce, creative, brand, and marketing teams. In those environments, the challenge is often less about who can do the work and more about where the work should begin.

There may be dozens of product pages that could be improved, multiple campaigns that could be optimized, and competing opportunities across the business. Determining which of those opportunities deserves attention first can quickly become subjective, particularly when internal teams are balancing ecommerce priorities against the needs of the broader organization.

Via gives us a way to bring more clarity to that process.  We can identify where the opportunity appears to be, explain why it deserves attention, and estimate the potential impact before a team commits resources to it. That might lead to a major content rebuild, a smaller optimization, a change somewhere else in the account, or even a decision not to invest at all.

The goal isn’t to create more work. It is to make the work more focused and ensure that time and resources are going toward the opportunities most likely to matter.

Better Intelligence Changes the Conversation

The most meaningful change Via creates isn’t another layer of reporting. It changes the conversation our teams are able to have with clients.

When less time is spent assembling the picture, more time can be spent thinking about what the picture means. That allows conversations to move beyond reporting on performance and toward deciding what should happen next.

Sometimes that means identifying an opportunity earlier.  challenging an assumption or recommending that a client not spend money where they had planned to.  In other cases, it means giving an internal team greater confidence about where its effort will create the most value.

That is how we think about the relationship between technology and expertise. Better technology should not remove judgment from the equation. It should give experienced people better information, more context, and more time to apply that judgment.

Via is becoming a central part of how we do that at Channel Key.

Where Via’s Commerce Intelligence System Takes Us Next

Commerce will continue producing more data, more platforms, and more signals. The advantage won’t come from simply having access to all of it. It will come from knowing which signals matter, understanding them in context, and acting while the opportunity is still there.

That is what Via is designed to help our teams do: move from signal to decision faster, with better context and greater confidence.

Because understanding what happened is useful. Knowing what to do next is where the value is created.
